A time of reckoning for Facebook: Advertisers are questioning the efficacy of ads and new policies are announced limiting “social movement” (political) ads. Also Instagram gets a slidey thing.

Facebook’s political ads policy

In a bid to clean up its ad network, Facebook now requires authorization for every advertiser that wants to promote on national and political issues. The new policy includes a list of 20 issues including abortion, guns and immigration. While currently this only impacts advertisers targeting U.S. users, it’s likely to extend to other locations.

Advertisers question ROI on Facebook

Facebook’s dominance in the ad spend space is declining. Brands and agencies are looking to other channels to reach their audiences. Advertisers are more concerned that they are wasting money on Facebook than they are about the platform’s privacy lapses. In lighter and more fun news, Instagram has given users easier ways to answer questions. An emoji slider sticker for use in Stories has been released, allowing followers to answer questions using a sliding scale, rather than choosing one of two pre-determined answers

Facebook Live tests new features

It’s reported this week that there’s testing of a feature called “Live Rewind” for Facebook Live videos. Soon you’ll be able to scroll back to that defining moment you missed without having to wait until the stream is over. Ideal for sporting events.
