A 'novel' experience for Facebook Messenger
Facebook Watch to overtake YouTube
Facebook introduced Watch on August 9 and deemed it “a new platform for shows on Facebook.” While video has been a focus of Facebook’s for the last several years, Watch is the company’s first effort to brand video as a standalone property.
2018 is set to be a big year for Watch. Facebook Watch will eventually overtake YouTube via a three-pronged approach that will drive advertisers, viewers, and content creators toward the platform and away from YouTube. Read all here.
Twitter enforces new anti-abuse rules
Twitter is to begin enforcing its new anti-abuse rules in its efforts to counter perceptions that it is not doing enough to protect those targeted by abuse and hate speech on the social media site. The new guidelines, leaked in October and announced in November, cover abuse, hate symbols, sexual advances and violent groups, and are part of Twitter’s two-year work to counteract inappropriate content and behaviour, according to chief executive Jack Dorsey.
Facebook clamps down on engagement-begging
Facebook have announced this week that it will penalize Page owners and people who resort to “engagement bait,” which means posts that encourage users to like, comment or tag people in the comments section in order to gain wider visibility of their content. A new tweak to the Newsfeed algorithm will mean “stricter demotions” for Pages and individuals who adopt engagement-bait tactics. Those who do so will have the total reach on all of their posts reduced if their content is begging or baiting users to interact. As you’d expect, serial offenders will be hit hardest.
Twitter makes threads official
Twitter has built in a feature which now lets users officially use Twitter threads as opposed to, well, just tweeting again and again and again. If you post a thread, the first tweet will appear in the timeline as normal, along with up to two more tweets from the thread. To see the rest, your followers will need to tap “show this thread.
Twitter also now allows you to see how many views a video has had.
