VR: What’s next?
Our world as we know it is running on artificial intelligence (AI). Siri manages our calendars, Facebook suggests our friends and computers trade our stocks. Almost every field has benefited from advances in AI, from the military to medicine to manufacturing. It’s a matter of time until machine learning finds a niche in the world of education, which is currently lagging behind.
We need to question the traditional approaches to education and embrace new modes of learning to help create the next generation of leaders. AI could play a very important role in adaptive learning, evaluating the quality of curriculum material and creating unique pathways for individual learners.
How AI can work for education
Automating basic activities like grading would allow teachers to focus more on in-class activities and student interaction than marking work. Creating virtual classrooms using AI would enable students to learn anywhere, anytime with courses customised to their needs. This means the content of the lessons can be kept up-to-date (no more mouldy old textbooks!), and the knowledge more relevant to the needs of today’s fast-evolving workplace.
Intelligent computer systems are already making changes to how colleges interact with prospective and current students. With AI baked into the process, the college experience is becoming closely tailored to the needs of the student.
Data mining systems are already part of today’s higher-education landscape, but AI could take things even further. Some schools are already offering students AI-guided training to ease the jump from between high school to college.
In conclusion, there will always be a role for teachers in education. What that role is, and what it entails, will change as technology develops and reshapes our world. Oh, the places we’ll go!
